Chapter 11

We were back at the Dretsky estate about ten minutes later. Claire explained to her mother what we intended to do and she sent us out to a large field far away from the house. “Be really careful when you spawn a wither and an ender dragon,” she said. “I’m not sure how they’re going to react.”

“Don’t worry, we’ve got a plan. What could go wrong?” I said. Everyone there except Hermione, who didn’t know me very well, rolled his or her eyes.

Once we were in the field, I looked at Hermione and asked, “So, how does this work exactly?”

“Well, let’s try it first with a chicken spawn egg. You’ll get the idea,” she said. She reached into her inventory and pulled out a light grey egg, speckled with red. She held it in the air and said, “I’ll toss this on the ground near you and a chicken will appear. Then, you can touch the chicken and gain the ability to transmogrify into a chicken again.”

“Go for it,” I said.

She tossed the egg on the ground and it cracked open. There was a slight bit of smoke and then, as if by magic, a chicken was standing in front of me, pecking at the grass. I jumped at the chicken and grabbed it. I could feel my chicken transmogrification power return. I tossed the chicken away and let it continue to peck the ground. “This is amazing! How come I’ve never heard of spawn eggs before?”

KindHermione shrugged. “I don’t know. My sister said I shouldn’t discuss it.”

“Whatever. Which egg should we try next?” I asked.

We continued until we made it through all of the passive mobs, like cows, mooshrooms, and rabbits. We worked up to the neutral mobs. These were a little more difficult, but as long as I approached them in a nonthreatening manner, it was easy for me to make contact and gain their powers.

For the mobs that would burn to death in the light, we found a shaded area under a tree. For example, we spawned a zombie in the shade and I teleported to its side, touched it, regained the relevant powers, and teleported away. The zombie noticed me, standing in the sunlight. It moaned and then ambled toward me, groaning and craving my flesh. Then it walked into the sunlight and … well, you know the story, it burned to death.

With the hostile mobs, we spawned the mob, I teleported next to it, touched it, and teleported away. Then, the rest of the squad killed it. It was a nasty, brutish, and short life for the mob, but it was the only way I could be back to full strength.

And so we were able to continue with all of the other mobs until we arrived at the most difficult mobs. “I’m not sure we should try to spawn a ghast in the Overworld,” I said to Hermione.

She nodded. “Why don’t I just give you the egg and the next time you’re in the
